Public-oriented half-hour presentations at The Lost Colony’s indoor Gazebo Theatre from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

9:20 AM— MR. BRENT LANE — Who was this man of many secrets we honor today?

[An introduction to the here-to-fore illusive Thomas Harriot.]

9:35 AM— DR. KAREN KUPPERMAN — Knowledge-seeking through collaboration in Roanoke

[A close-up view of 1585-1586 Roanoke Island colonist Thomas Harriot and his collaborations with other colonists and Native Americans to fulfill his mission of discovering as much as possible about the New World and its people.]

10:10 AM— DR. ROBERT FOX — Harriot’s Oxford

[A presentation based on the Oxford University which Thomas Harriot, who was a student there, would have known. Harriot is included on St. Mary’s Hall registry in 1577, receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1580.]

11:05 AM— DR. STEVEN CLUCAS —Mathematical neighbours: Thomas Harriot & John Dee

[Explores the mathematical developments and processes of Thomas Harriot—a graduate of Oxford, and John Dee—a graduate of Cambridge.]

11:40 AM— ALAN GALLAY — Harriot and Raleigh in the Tower

[During Raleigh’s long tenure in the Tower (1603 – 1616) he continued his scientific research and historical writing, assisted by his senior advisor Thomas Harriot.]

1:45 PM— DR. KARIN AMUNDSEN — By way of trafficke and exchaunge: Metals and Providential History in Thomas Harriot’s “A briefe and true report” (1590)

[Harriot’s role reporting on the 1585 discoveries is set in the context of contemporary international competition for metals.]

2:20 PM— DR. ROBYN ARIANRHOD — Harriot, the Astronomer & Mathematician

[Thomas Harriot was noted as the mathematician teaching navigation to Elizabethan mariners, then as the geographer of North America, but his later astronomical discoveries were never published. ]

3:15 PM— DR. CARTER HUDGINS — Harriot’s home in Ireland, Molana Abbey

[After writing his report on Virginia, Harriot went to Ireland, assisting Raleigh in surveying and managing the vast estates bestowed by Queen Elizabeth, and in return he was given Molana Abbey and its landholdings. But did Harriot ever make it his home?]

[Discussion of Native Americans as depicted and described by two eye-witnesses for an English & European audience.]

[Overview of the great interest shown by Renaissance Europe in New World natives, and the role played by Algonquians in the Contact Period.]

10:15 AM— MS. MARGARET B. PRITCHARD — Illustrating Harriot: John White & Mark Catesby

[Travelling far wider than White in 1585, an early 18th –century naturalist wrote and illustrated a natural history of Virginia and the Carolinas.]

[1590 printing of Thomas Harriot’s detailed report on North Carolina remains a key resource for scholarship]

11:45 AM— MR. DUNCAN JAMES — Newly Discovered Elizabethan Carvings of New-World Indians — Moderated by Dr. Eric Klingelhofer

[Presents a strong case that the carvings may be of Manteo & Wanchese ]

[Archaeology at the Mettaquem settlement, now preserved in Salmon Creek Natural Area in Bertie County, offers new information on Carolina Algonquians.]

Public-oriented presentations focusing on popular names in aviation history at The Gazebo Theatre at Fort Raleigh.

Vintage Aircraft Fly-Over Finale

OBX History Weekend: Searchers of New Horizons closes mid-afternoon with a fly-over finale of Vintage Aircraft.

Planes will be visible from the air at Wright Brothers National Memorial and from The Lost Colony Waterside Theatre at Fort Raleigh. Narrations at both locations.
