Halloween isn’t just for the kids. The Beer Witch Project at the Outer Banks Brewing Station invites those ages 21 and up to join them for a Halloween-themed beer mile run. Drink, run, drink, run, drink, run, drink, run your way to the finish line. From there you’re invited to enjoy the infamous after-party following the race in the Brewing Station’s backyard, where you’ll inevitably drink some more. The runs are ¼ mile and the drinks are 10-ounce pours. Familiar faces from the Brewing Station’s crew will appear as zombies, witches, ghouls, vampires and more as they serve up drinks. Awards will be given to the first man and woman to finish the run, and there will also be a costume contest for the scariest and most creative. Is it true that old buildings really are spookier? Find out for yourself at Creepy in Corolla. This annual event is organized each year by Whalehead and the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. The two attractions, Currituck beach businesses and residents come together to create a family friendly Halloween experience in Historic Corolla. Children sporting their Halloween attire begin the night at the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, which is decorated for the event. Climb the haunted lighthouse as darkness falls over Corolla, and see if the lighthouse keepers of yesteryear are giving out tricks or treats. From there, make your way towards Whalehead Park among the rows of Trunk or Treaters, provided by local businesses and townspeople. Upon arriving at Whalehead, enter if you dare to find even more treats inside of the Halloween-ready house. The 5K course takes runners from the Roanoke Island’s Coastal Studies Institute to the Dare County Center on the scenic trail full of woodland and marsh views. Prizes are awarded to the top three male and female runners. The Sweet Treat Fun Run follows the 5K and is open to both walkers and runners. Costumes are strongly encouraged, so you can channel your outer Nike as well as inner one for this event. During one of the first Saturdays in December, Hatteras’s businesses, residents, the fire department, U.S. Coast Guard and nonprofit organizations come together for an all-inclusive Christmas parade experience. As twilight falls spectators line the streets and watch the procession of decorated vehicles and floats roll from Teach’s Lair Marina and through Hatteras Village until it reaches Hatterasman Drive-In. The Holiday at the Museum offers attractive activities for visitors of all ages. Children can work on their letters to Santa and create holiday crafts to take home. Local vendors and artisans sell handcrafted holiday decor, and adults looking for decorating inspiration or for gift ideas will love browsing the selection. Live music from local musicians – ranging from choral groups to bands – fill the air with the sounds of Christmas. There are plenty of delightful spectacles to feast your eyes on including the Winter Wonderland train display and the elaborately decorated Christmas trees. Speaking of feasting, come hungry for home-style Hatteras cooking – characters like ham biscuits, hot soup and cookies may appear on the refreshments table. Watch – and taste – as the top chefs on the Outer Banks battle it out to turn canned food into culinary masterpieces. The Annual Holiday Chefs' Challenge is a fundraiser for the Beach Food Pantry that brings all of the excitement and energy from cooking show competitions right to Manteo. Participating chefs have 60 minutes to prepare a dish that uses items the Food Pantry usually keeps in stock, always including at least one canned good item. Attendees are invited to judge the chefs’ work and vote for their favorite dishes, and the only way they can determine this is by sampling everything. Standard tickets include event entrance, Chefs' Creations and two drink tickets. Those who opt for the VIP tickets also receive an open bar in addition to a glimpse behind the scenes at the special reception. This event usually occurs in mid-November to early December.

The whole town comes out to see local school bands, vintage cars, the famous Shriners funny cars, SPCA dogs, kids on horseback, dance troupes, floats of all sorts, Queen Elizabeth I and her court (from The Lost Colony) and Santa arriving on the fire truck. Starting at 10:30 a.m. on the first Saturday in December, the parade runs from Manteo High School down Wingina Street, along John Borden Street to Croatan Avenue to Queen Elizabeth Street to Fernando Street. Find a spot anywhere along that route to enjoy the sights and sounds of a small-town holiday celebration. Downtown on Queen Elizabeth Avenue, close to the official parade stage and emcee at the historic courthouse, is probably the most popular spot for spectators. Be sure to get to town early because you'll probably have to park a ways back on a side street and walk to your viewing area. After the parade you can get photos with Santa at the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum on Fernando Street.

Hundreds of people gather on Queen Elizabeth Avenue in front of the historic Dare County Courthouse to enjoy performances of holiday music, to sip hot cocoa and to watch the lighting of the waterfront Christmas tree. The event coincides with downtown Manteo's monthly First Friday event, which means that after the lighting you can stick around for live music around town, art exhibits and receptions, a book signing, dining in the restaurants and shopping in the shops. The Outer Banks Running Club’s main fundraiser, the OBX Gobble 5K and Fun Run, is an annual Thanksgiving event that the entire family is invited to enjoy. The courses take participants through Nags Head, making it hard not to feel thankful for the environment’s natural beauty. This family friendly event is open to all runners, joggers and walkers. Runners who want to include younger participants with them are encouraged to bring baby strollers, jogging strollers and wagons. Runners who aren’t enticed by the length of the 5K can opt for the Fun Run, which has a 9/10 mile course. All who finish the race receive a finisher’s award. Before gathering around the Thanksgiving table, gather your crew for a morning run. The Surfin’ Turkey 5K and Puppy Drum Run is an annual Thanksgiving event in Hatteras that lets you and your family participate in a shared activity while working up an appetite for some real turkey later in the day. The runs start at the Hatteras Village Civic Center and wind through the historic fishing village. If you don’t want to commit to the 5K, the Puppy Drum is a half-mile long and open to walkers and runners. Upon finishing the race, enjoy the post-race pancake party, including Carolina Brewery drinks for racers ages 21 and older. The registration fee for the event includes sign up, a goody bag, t-shirt and access to the after party. Children ages 10 and under can register for free. All proceeds from this event go to the Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund, which promotes education opportunities in the local schools. This event is held on Thanksgiving morning.

Give thanks for fleet feet and craft beers by simultaneously enjoying both. The Tipsy Turkey Beer Mile Run is the Outer Banks Brewing Station’s way of welcoming Thanksgiving featuring a bounty of beer and accompanying good spirits. This beer mile is hosted by the OBX Running Company, so participants’ experiences also include chip timing, event swag and possibly prize. Runs are ¼ mile paired with 10-ounce drinks for the length of one mile total. Upon finishing the race, the runners gather at the Brewing Station’s backyard for a party of mixing, mingling and more delicious craft brews. Participants are encouraged to wear their holiday best, and costumes will be judged for the most creative following the race. This annual event usually occurs on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

The Elizabethan Gardens transforms into a winter wonderland during the holiday season. Walk outside along the whimsical path lit by Christmas lights and cheery holiday characters, and you’ll pull your coat a little tighter around you because there’s no way you’re going inside yet. This is your chance to revel in the beauty of the holiday season. The gardens are embellished with thousands of twinkling lights, topiaries, displays and more. Decorations in the gardens range from traditional to alternative, and they all work together to create a magical experience. In the center of all the decorations you’ll find a crackling open-air fire on the Great Lawn, perfect for warming your hands and maybe roasting a marshmallow. Special events are held throughout the duration of WinterLights, with offerings such as Dinner with Santa and Thank You Notes to Santa. In late November and early December, WinterLights is held Tuesday through Saturday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. In January it's held on Friday and Saturday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. See the website for more information.
