One of the Outer Banks’ best-known claims to fame is the Wright brothers and their successful attempt at powered flight. To commemorate the Wright brothers’ advances in the field, the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills marks the spot where the first powered and controlled flight in an airplane occurred. You can visit the Wright Brothers Memorial today to see where the first series of flights took off and landed and an information center to learn about the Wright brothers’ history and their original designs for airplanes. Another Outer Banks flight-oriented activity is the Dare County Regional Airport Museum. At this museum you can learn more about the history of flight on the Outer Banks beyond the Wright brothers, such as the importance of Outer Banks flight in World War II and local aviator heroes. Check out the listings below and prepare for a fun and educational experience with Outer Banks flight-oriented attractions.

UltraFlight OBX offers aerial tours in a motorized hang glider attached to a two-seater trike. It's a completely open-air experience, and your views are completely unobstructed. The trike takes off from the Currituck County Regional Airport and heads straight for the Outer Banks shoreline. You can choose a short 15-minute trip or go for 30 or 60 minutes. The pilot is FAA certified, of course, and can teach the passenger a little about the basics of flying a weight-shift aircraft, if you're interested.
