On December 17, 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright made the first successful engine-powered flight in the dunes of Kill Devil Hills. The National Park Service made the site a park, complete with its memorial and newly renovated visitors center. Today the Wright Brothers National Memorial marks to spot of the first flight. The park is open year round to visitors and tours seven days a week (excluding federal holidays). The Wright Brothers Visitors Center offers programs that explore the history and science behind the Wright brothers' endeavor.
