Kitty Hawk Elementary School, SOARING at KHES Week of May 18th

Last week, I didn't write about our 5th grade Family Science Night because I didn't have any pictures to share.  I had heard how awesome the event had been but was unable to show you.  Now, I will let the pictures speak for themselves!  Obviously, Family Science Night was a great learning experience for both kids and parents!  Way to go 5th grade:-)

Last Thursday, our 4th graders put on their North Carolina musical.  Every time I see this show, I learn something else about our great state.  Not only do our 4th graders know a lot about North Carolina...they can also sing!  Click here to watch the video!

This week:

KHES is participating in the Give 5 Read 5 campaign, which sends students home with 5 books to encourage summer reading and to prevent the "summer slide".  Research from Harvard shows that elementary students who read 4-5 books at their reading level over the summer are better prepared to start the following school year!  Our community can help by donating new, or gently used picture and chapter books for our students to choose during our book swap.  To encourage donations, we are giving ice cream parties for the 2 top donating classes (K-2 and 3-5). Donations should be dropped off with your student's name on the bag so his/her class can get credit!  Deadline is May 29th.  Thank you for supporting this great event!

Thursday, May 21st, is our annual 2-3 transition night.  Our 3rd grade teachers, including myself, invite all parents/guardians of soon to be 3rd graders to attend an informational session about what to expect in 3rd grade.  We will serve a quick pizza dinner at 5:30 and our meeting will begin at 6:00.  We look forward to meeting all of you:-)

Friday, May 22nd, is a half day with dismissal at 12:00.  Our student council has decided that our spirit day theme for that day will be the 80's.  I know many of you, like myself, remember this decade well so dig deep in those closets for some vintage attire!

Mark your calendar:

Monday, May 25th, is Memorial Day.  School will be closed so enjoy some extra time with family and friends.  Be safe and be patient as the tourist season begins:-)

Friday, May 29th, is our annual Field Day.  I know I have mentioned this several times, but Coach D is still in need of some volunteers.  It is always a fun and exciting day so if you can, please volunteer!  You can email Coach D at dvorinda@daretolearn.org.

Until next time....
