Hello Kitty Hawk Elementary School families, friends, and community members.  Our school has teamed up with the Dare Education Foundation and One Boat to establish a platform that will facilitate communication with regard to past events, upcoming events, and volunteering opportunities.  Our hope is that this site will provide you with quick access to our upcoming calendar of events and an easy way to find out about volunteering opportunities throughout our building.

So, navigating  our site is super easy.  To read the Blog, click on the Blog icon.  To learn about upcoming events, click on events.  To view pictures, click on Gallery.  To get on our mailing list, click on Mailing List.  To donate, click on Things We Need.  To volunteer, click on Volunteer Opportunities.  It is that simple.

Last week, our school was decorated to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday.  Each classroom door was decorated in such a way as to transport our students into the amazing, imaginative world of Dr. Seuss.  Hopefully, you had a chance to walk our halls and enjoy the view.  The contest for best door was a tight race but in the end, the best door was awarded to Mrs. Gray's classroom.  Way to go Mrs. Gray's class!

Many of you participate in the annual Empty Bowls event.  After being cancelled due to inclement weather, the event finally took place and was a huge success.  Thank you to everyone that made and donated their bowls and all the individuals that came out and warmed they bodies and souls with delicious soup.  Together, we can do great things.

Jump Rope for Heart was another huge success for our school.  Even with many missed days, Coach D pulled off another amazing, stress free event.  Way to get it done Coach D.  All in all, our jump ropers earned $5,349 for the American Heart Associations.  Again, together, we can do great things.  Coach D has also requested volunteers for our annual field day scheduled for May 29th.  If interested, please click on the Volunteer icon and sign up!

Our annual Battle of the Books (formerly Fiction Diggers) contest started last week.  Several teams competed here at our school for the right to represent KHES at the Dare County Battle of the Books competition on March 31st at Manteo High School.  The winning team includes Maggie, Reagan, Lily, Caleigh, Emma, Bella, Isabella, Charlotte, Maura, Ben, Brigid, and Olivia.  Way to go READERS!!!  Thinking about books... our librarian, Ellen Bryson, is also in need of volunteers for our Scholastic Book Fair.  If interested, please click on the Volunteer icon and sign up!

Recently, KHES had 2 groups participate in the Odyssey of the Mind competition at FFHS.  Our Pandora's Box team (Charlotte, Tommy, Bridgett, Stella, Jacob, and Emily) came in eighth and our Runaway Train team (Robbie, Lily, Zach, Jo-Jo, Noah, and Connor) came in first place!  The Runaway Train team will be heading off to the state tournament!

Our music teacher, Ms. Penny, has been working hard to help some of our students prepare for their stage performance of Tom Sawyer.  Please mark your calendars for April 2nd!  There will be a show during the school day and one at 7 pm.  You will not want to miss this event!

Looking for something fun to do this Friday night (March 20th)?  If so, please join the PTA for Movie Night here at KHES.  The movie, Big Hero 6, will start at 6:00pm.

With Spring rapidly approaching, we all hope that this week will provide a full week of learning opportunities for our students.  As we get down to the wire, it is important that students arrive on time and stay until 2:30 each day.  A lot of vital learning happens first thing in the morning and right up to the end of the day.  Thank you so much for helping us make the most of each hour of instruction.

Until next time,

Melissa Bender,

Third Grade Teacher
