Kitty Hawk Elementary School, SOARing at KHES week of January 25, 2016

A big thank you to Michele Godsey and Southern Bank for their generous donation of bike helmets to Kitty Hawk Elementary School!  A new effort was launched on January 4, 2016 by Dare County Superintendent Dr. Sue Burgess that aims at enforcing the state law requiring all students under the age of 16 to wear a bike helmet when riding a bike. The Superintendent's initiative also includes skateboards. If a student arrives at school without a helmet, parents will be notified. In the event a parent cannot bring a helmet to school for their child, one will be provided. Adults, who want to be good role models, should be wearing a helmet when riding their bike.  We have and will continue to expect students to wear a bike helmet when riding a bike to and from school. Let's work together to keep our children safe!!

Family Math Night is coming on Thursday, February 18!  Students who are accompanied by a parent are invited to come to KHES to enjoy an hour of math games and fun activities. Most of the fun will be led by students. All grades will participate, so there will be developmentally appropriate games for all students. Please plan to attend on Feb. 18th from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm!

Melissa Haight held a Hyperbolic Celebration recently. Students in Melissa Haight's reading group were told if they mastered their long and short vowel sounds, she would toss their flash cards out the window.  The kids thought this was a great incentive and worked extra hard to see it happen. The students had to match a picture card to it's correct vowel sound. They used this activity to explore different syllable types and why vowels sound the way they do.

Dare county's Miles of Smiles travels to all the elementary schools in the county to provide dental care to the children. Click here for more information. You can also contact our school nurse, Cindy Stone, at stoneci@daretolearn.org or 252-261-2313 ext.1625.
