Kitty Hawk Elementary School, SOARing at KHES week of April 11, 2016

Second Grade has been studying biographies recently. Students researched a famous person then wrote their biography. The unit of study culminated with the students writing a speech from the biography then transforming into that person for a living wax museum.

Assistant Principal Debbie Shepheard read to Ms. Farrell's Kindergarten recently. She read If You Give A Moose A Muffin by Laura Numeroff to the students.

Don't forget to visit the Groovy Book Fair this week, April 11-15!  Open daily 7:30-3:30 and Wednesday until 6:00 pm.

Join us in our One Book, One School Project! KHES kicked off the project on Friday, April 8. Our school is reading The World According To Humphrey by Betty G. Birney.

Why read aloud? Read alone or as a class, with a fellow student, or with your child, but consider reading out loud. The benefits of reading aloud are remarkable. Studies have shown that reading to children helps them listen better and longer, build bigger vocabularies, understand concepts better, feel positive about both books and learning.

Why One Book, One School? When an entire school reads the same book, the buzz and excitement will enhance the benefits listed above. In addition, reading a book together expand and strengthen a sense of community among students, parents, teachers, and staff.  Source:www.ReadtoThem.org

About the Humphrey series: With his common sense and aggressive nose for right and wrong, Humphrey turns the world of those he meets upside down – for the better! Fresh from the Pet-O-Rama, Humphrey slowly endears himself to the students in Room 26 – and to the adults lucky enough to know him. What Humphrey really does is teach lessons. The non-didactic kind. Leading by example. It is Betty G. Birney’s genius to let Humphrey recognize and supply the life lessons that give both students and adults confidence – and enables them to confront their secrets and meet their respective challenges.  Source:www.ReadtoThem.org

Donate your books!  Do you have an extra copy of the book that your family does not need? Consider donating it to our library so we can redistribute them as needed. At the end of this event we will take your donated books to recycle them on to another community of readers.

We encourage all students, staff and parents to participate! Be sure to discuss each chapter with other readers!!
