Kitty Hawk Elementary School, SOARing at KHES October 26, 2015

Hello Kitty Hawk Elementary School families, friends, and community members.  Our school has teamed up with the Children & Youth Partnership of Dare County and One Boat  this year to maintain a platform that will facilitate communication with regard to past events, upcoming events, and volunteer opportunities.  Our hope is that this site will provide you with quick access to our upcoming calendar of events and an easy way to find out about volunteer opportunities throughout our building.

So, navigating  our site is super easy.  To read the Blog, click on the Blog icon.  To learn about upcoming events, click on events.  To view pictures, click on Gallery.  To get on our mailing list, click on Mailing List.  To donate, click on Things We Need.  To volunteer, click on Volunteer Opportunities.  It is that simple.

We are off to a great start this year! Our 56th Annual Fall Carnival on October 10 was a huge success! It was actually record breaking with a grand total of over $75,000!! WOW!  A big thank you to all the students, staff , parent volunteers and the entire community for making this event possible! We could not do it without the combined efforts and generosity of all! The top 2 student raffle ticket sellers were each awarded a new bicycle! Congratulations to Zach Etheridge and Olivia Fisher! This year we had a separate raffle for a trip to St. Kitts! The winner was our very own KHES teacher Shelley Summerton Gregg and her mom!

In other news, Fifth grade went on their Sound to Sea field trip October 16.  Fifth Grade partnered with NC Aquarium staff to study weather and ecosystems. Students began the day at the Bonnett Street beach access to study the ocean ecosystem then headed to Nags Head Woods to explore forest, sound, dune and swamp ecosystems. They took water, soil and plant life samples for their booklets. It was quite the adventure  which included a swarm of bees!

Kindergarten visited Morris Farm in Currituck on Thursday, October 22. In addition to a hayride to the pumpkin patch, students learned about life on a farm, different kinds of pumpkins and apples and even how to make apple cider! Each student got to choose a pumpkin which they brought back to school for some pumpkin comparison activities.

In community news, the Southern Shores Volunteer Fire Department will be conducting a child safety seat checking station on November 6. It will be located at the fire department ( 15 S. Dogwood Trail- right across from Kitty Hawk Elementary School!).
