Halloween isn’t just for the kids. The Beer Witch Project at the Outer Banks Brewing Station invites those ages 21 and up to join them for a Halloween-themed beer mile run. Drink, run, drink, run, drink, run, drink, run your way to the finish line. From there you’re invited to enjoy the infamous after-party following the race in the Brewing Station’s backyard, where you’ll inevitably drink some more. The runs are ¼ mile and the drinks are 10-ounce pours. Familiar faces from the Brewing Station’s crew will appear as zombies, witches, ghouls, vampires and more as they serve up drinks. Awards will be given to the first man and woman to finish the run, and there will also be a costume contest for the scariest and most creative. Preregistration is required for this event, and you can sign up on the Outer Banks Brewing Station’s website.

Wait ... kegs can fly?! Who knew? Kitty Hawk Kites knows because they sponsor this fun (and funny) festival every October. Various groups around the Outer Banks create "flying" machines out of 1/6 kegs (empty ones) and whatever contraption they can come up with that might – emphasis on the word might – fly off a platform. It's a ton of fun to watch. When you combine that with a craft beer garden, local food vendors, live music, a kids' zone and more, you're in line for a pretty fun experience. For more information or questions, visit the event's website.

Is it true that old buildings really are spookier? Find out for yourself at Creepy in Corolla. This annual event is organized each year by Whalehead and the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. The two attractions, Currituck beach businesses and residents come together to create a family friendly Halloween experience in Historic Corolla. Children sporting their Halloween attire begin the night at the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, which is decorated for the event. From there, make your way towards Whalehead Park among the rows of Trunk or Treaters, provided by local businesses and townspeople. Upon arriving at Whalehead, enter if you dare to find even more treats inside of the Halloween-ready house. This annual event is on Halloween night from 6 to 8 p.m., and is festive fun for Halloween lovers of young, old and anywhere in between.

Celebrate Currituck’s down-home, country culture with barbecue and a rodeo. The Currituck Heritage Bulls & BBQ is an annual fall event that brings excitement and family friendly fun to Currituck residents and visitors of all ages – no native ties required. The People’s Choice BBQ and Kansas City BBQ Competition are the cornerstones of this event. Local restaurants and barbecue experts battle it out for title of the best barbecue, and attendees sample the creations, ranging from tangy to sweet and smoky to succulent. After everyone has voted for their favorite barbecue, the competition concludes with an awards ceremony. Following the barbecue competition, the attention turns from pigs to cows as the festival’s evening rodeo opens, presenting the talents of professional bull riders. Other activities during the event include corn hole tournaments, children’s games and browsing the wares from local vendors, including food and funky crafts, products and more. It’s a delicious, engaging but low-key event that shines a little extra love on this interior area of the Outer Banks.

This is one of the most fun fall traditions on the Outer Banks. Stroll around The Elizabethan Gardens, which are beautiful at any time of the year. Take a hayride through the gardens, twist and turn through the hay bale maze, stuff a scarecrow, make an educational craft, get your face painted, listen to music and stories and more. And when the chilly air makes you shiver, cozy up to the bonfire while sipping on some hot apple cider. Extra points if you enjoy a slice of pumpkin pie too. This event is usually held the third weekend in October.

Previously the Rockfish Rodeo, the Manteo Rotary Club has reformatted this fishing tournament due to the decline in the striper population. But don’t worry, a little change doesn’t take away any of the fun. There are now four categories that participants compete in: stripers, flounder, puppy drum and speckled trout. Prizes and awards are presented in adult, women’s and youth divisions for the heaviest fish from each category. It’s a great way to spend time with your family and friends while also enjoying the sport you love. And no fishing tournament is complete without entertainment. The day ends with a pig picking, live music and a silent auction. Proceeds from this Outer Banks annual event go to scholarships for young members of the Outer Banks community, so you’re fishing for a worthy cause. To register, go to www.rockfishrodeo.org.
