Charis (pronounced CARE-is, it means grace in Greek) offers a sophisticated coffeehouse setting in downtown Manteo. The coffee and espresso, roasted by longtime roasters in Wilmington, N.C., are available in all varieties, along with offerings of tea and chai. Locally made Ramblin' Root Kombucha is also sold here. For food there are muffins and cinnamon buns made fresh by Cafe Lachine in Nags Head and fresh bagels made by Barrier Island Bagels in Southern Shores. Oatmeal and protein bars are also available. Each month Charis donates 10 percent of its profits to a different charitable cause. If you're in a hurry, call in your order five minutes ahead of time, then pull up to the shop on Devon Street and they'll run your order out to you.
