Cape Hatteras Secondary School, This Week at Cape Hatteras Secondary School October 30th Edition

Marching Band Dominates

The CHSS Marching Band went to Pasquotank last Saturday and came back with 5 First place trophies.  The Canes were the 1st place overall winner in division 1A.  First place in Music, Marching, Percussion, Color Guard, and General Effect.  The Canes also got the highest score of all the bands competing in the Overall Effect category, scoring higher than the much larger division schools.  Great job to Mr. McCroskey, Ms. Harper, Ms. Polk, the Marching Band, and all involved that helped the Marching Band be so successful.  Good luck at your next competition on November 7th.

Middle School Students of the Month

The Middle School Students of the Month are: Sydney Brown, Jose Briones, Trey Jennette, Laura Hooper, Peyton Mungford, and Zach Gray.  The theme forthe  assembly was Tolerance.  Former CHSS Graduate and current US Coast Guard Service Member, Tanya Midgett, was the guest speaker.  Ms. Midgett talked to the students about her traveling experiences and seeing people from different cultures. She encouraged the students to be tolerant of all types of people they will encounter throughout their lives.

A lot of Spirit for the Hurricanes

This week was Spirit/Homecoming week for CHSS.  Students dressed up at baseball players, 50's style, a hot dog, tacky tourists, hippies, football stars, and many more characters to show their school spirit and support for our Hurricanes.  The week was capped off by a Homecoming parade, a trick or treat on the Tennis Court, Senior Night for Band - Cheer -  Football, the Football game vs Norfolk Christian, and Homecoming Ceremonies.  Thank you to all the parents, teachers, staff, and students that helped make this week enjoyable for the community.

On Wednesday, the Hurricanes celebrated the final home games for their Senior Soccer players:  Ian O'Neal, Tanner Peele, Eli Midgette, and Langston Cabral.  The Canes fell short to the conference champions, Camden, in a hard fought game 2-1.  The Hurricanes are expecting to make the playoffs by finishing 4th in the Conference.  Dates and times for the playoff game will be released as soon as the game has been confirmed.

Rachel's Challenge at CHSS

On Wednesday, October 29th Meichelle, a presenter from Rachel's Challenge, came to CHSS to share Rachel Scott's emotional story to the students.  The program was to show how one person's life can impact the world.  Rachel Scott lived her life to encourage the people around her, no matter of their circumstances they all had a purpose and were special.  The challenge for our students was to implement the 5 goals of Rachel's Challenge in our lives.

1. Eliminate Prejudices-Look for the Best in Others

2. Dare to Dream- Set Goals and Keep a Journal

3. Choose Positive Influences- Input Determines Output

4. Say Kind Words- Show Little Acts of Kindness

5. Start a Chain Reaction

Dare County Forensics Detective Works with Students

Dare County Police Department Detective, David Bryan, worked with CHSS students on a demonstration of the steps involved in solving a crime.  The case for the group to solve was stolen music cd's from  a residence. Middle School students were assigned roles as investigators, police officers, detectives, and the criminal to re-enact a crime scene investigation.  The students had a blast seeing how the fingerprint process works and how photography plays a key role in investigating crimes.

Bone Yard Reading Challenge

The third annual Boneyard Reading Challenge, sponsored by CHSS Media Center, took place Wednesday at Cape Hatteras Secondary School. 19 students in grades 6-10, along with several staff members, read Rick Yancey's The 5th Wave during the month of October and celebrated the end of the novel with one "dreadful" event! Students used their wits to answer questions about the novel and move through nine different "gates" around the school. Once the stations were completed they made their way out to the boneyard ~where the real fun began. Solving riddles and deciphering clues, all while avoiding frightfully clad community volunteers, made this year's challenge even more of an adventure! Congratulations to the winning team, 9th-grader Morgan Fairbanks and Math/AIG Instructor Jessica Polk.  All participants were treated to spooky snacks at the end of the event and the winners took home the widely sought after Amazon.com gift card.
