Cold Stunned Turtle Training

On Friday, a group of CHSS volunteers trained to become certified to care for cold stunned turtles.  Ms. Linda Austin, Media Center Specialist, is the sponsor for this group that helps Hatteras Island Wildlife Volunteers care for and help save cold stunned turtles. Last year school year, the group managed to save several turtles here on campus when the temperature reached freezing levels causing portions of the Pamlico Sound to freeze.  The students must renew their certifications each year and stay up to date with new methods on how to care for newly found sea turtles.  The students practicing weighing, measuring, and examining turtles with local experts.

DECA Partners with Food For Thought

Food For Thought was created in 2006 to help provide nutritious food for Manteo Elementary School children over the weekend.  It's an independent, non-profit organization whose mission is to reduce hunger and fuel academics.  It has grown considerably and now serves children from 4 years old - high school throughout the entire county.  However, its marketing campaign needed a fresher look.  So our local DECA chapter was approached to help them refresh their image through social media and to help spread the word that Food For Thought is here to help. So, they have partnered with CHSS DECA through the Creative Marketing DECA State Competitive Event to help them accomplish their mission while also serving as the backbone for their project.  It is a win-win for both. Seniors Macy Quidley and Miranda Veal have volunteered to take it under their wings.  In September, they participated in an actual food-packing event and took pictures to help them show the DECA group about their work. Macy and Miranda are helping to build a partnership with Food For Thought and CHSS DECA to help stop children from going hungry in Dare County.

OCS Class Makes Nutritious Items

Mrs. Garcia's OCS students spent the week preparing a nutritious item centered around honey, butternut quash, or oranges. The student's task was to research a recipe, prepare a list of items needed, and then prepare the dish for the class to sample. Some of the dishes included: baked butternut squash, feta mandarin orange salad, a smoothie drink, and a bread. The class all got to enjoy the tasty treats.

Foods Class Makes Butter

Cape Hatteras Secondary School Foods 1 students participated in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activity by making homemade butter on Tuesday, November 3. Teacher Evan Ferguson described, "They used an old fashion method of shaking whipping cream in a mason jar to separate the fat particles from the liquid. This fat, or butter, was used to make a compound with brown sugar and cinnamon. The compound butter paired nicely with this week's cooking lab, sweet potato biscuits and pumpkin bread." Here, junior Conner Day demonstrates.

AVID Researches Colleges

Middle School students were given the task this week to research a college of their choice. Students were challenged to learn about the application process, cost of a degree, activities on campus, landmarks on campus, famous graduates, and history of the college. Once the research was complete, students created a collage of images to represent what they learned in their studies.

AVID and Art Classes Visit ECU

On Thursday, Coach/AVID Teacher Keith Durham and Art Teacher Justin Paxton, took some students from their classes on a field trip to ECU.  Mr. Paxton, a recent graduate of ECU, was able to arrange a visit to the Art department and Science buildings.  The group was able to see some of the more popular sites on campus.  On their visit they ran into some former Hurricane graduates: Drew Tawes, Kate Tawes, Tricia Cutler, and Kayla Revels.  The graduates were helpful by answering some questions about the college, their classes, and activities on campus.
