OCS Annual Thanksgiving Dinner

Mrs. Ashlee Garcia's OCS classes planned, purchased, and prepared a traditional Thanksgiving meal for their families and CHSS Staff on Friday.  The students chose a menu to prepare and then researched recipes for their dishes.  Some of the delicious items were: mashed potatoes, broccoli and rice casserole, sweet potato casserole, homemade rolls, and turkey.  Thank you OCS Class, Mrs. Jennifer Kingery, Ms. Paxton Gwinn, and Mrs. Garcia for a delicious meal.

Cold Stunned Turtle Training

The Cold-Stun Turtle Training Program, sponsored by the CHSSCS Media Center, is a collaborative effort between CHSSCS, NC Wildlife Resource Commission, and Hatteras Island Cold Stun volunteer group, which is coordinated by Frank Welles. Thirty-four students in grades 6-12 completed the cold-stun rescue and data collection/reporting training in the morning with NCWRC's  Wildlife Education Specialist, Jane Kepler.  Four AP Biology students and five students in grades 7-9, having previously completed an advanced training, participated in a sea turtle necropsy session hosted by Erin Del Monte in the CHSS Biology lab with Jane Kepler and NCWRC's Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education Program Coordinator, Karen Clark.

8th Graders Learn CPR

Through a partnership with the Outer Banks Community Foundation and Dare County Schools, every Dare County public schools’ eighth grader was trained in hands-only CPR on Monday, November 16 at Cape Hatteras Secondary School of Coastal Studies. CHSSCS training was conducted by Health/PE teacher AD Woody Willis.  Each student was given a CPR Anytime kit to learn on and to take home for a community impact project.  They were given a paper to document at least five additional people they show the DVD and allow to practice the compressions they learned in class.  Dana Else, CPR in Schools Manager Mid-Atlantic Affiliate states, “Eighty-eight percent of cardiac arrest is likely to happen in the home.  By teaching our students these life-saving skills, and allowing families to learn, we are all making Dare County a safer place.  The more bystanders we can train, the more likely that early compressions will be started while trained professionals are on the way.  Everyone can learn to do CPR and anyone can act fast- any CPR is better than no CPR."

COA Visits 9th Graders

Dean of COA Dare Campus,Tim Sweeny and COA Student Life/Success Coach Katie Cross met with CHSS 9th Graders on Wednesday to discuss planning their future.  They encouraged students to not wait until they are Seniors, but to take school serious and begin to challenge themselves.  CHSS Students have the option to take college credit courses from COA, Honors, and AP courses to help prepare them for higher education.  Mr. Sweeny stressed that colleges look at those types of courses on a student's application along with their extra curricular activities.  It is never to early to start planning your future.
