Cape Hatteras Secondary School, This Week at Cape Hatteras Secondary School November 13th Edition

Hatteras Island Veterans Honored

Hatteras Island Veterans were celebrated and thanked on Friday at CHSS.  The morning started off with a breakfast that was served to the Vets, prepared by the Foods and OCS classes. At 9:30 the gym was filled with students and community members to show their support for the Veterans as they entered the gym with patriotic music played by the CHSS Band.  The elementary school 1st grade classes brought hand made cards and sang a song to the Vets.  The CHSS Band also played a tribute to the Vets by performing each one of the branches service songs.  Guest speaker, Anthony Anderson from "Stolen Valor", performed a great speech to the audience on respect for the service men and women.  This was a great event that brought over 50 Veterans to CHSS and thank you again to all that helped make this event one to remember.

CHSS Students Strike Gold

In a collaborative venture between the CHSS Media Center and Ali Minn's U.S. History class, 10th grade students pioneered their way through a westward expansion simulation, which pitted teams in a quest to find gold. Saddled with an interactive notebook including primary documents, videos, maps, GPS coordinates, and a QR code reader. Students followed Lewis and Clark's route, boarded the Union Pacific Rail, purchased acreage through the Homestead Act, and panned for gold in California.
