CHSS Science Olympiad State Team

Seven Cape Hatteras Secondary students were given the opportunity to attend the State Science Olympiad Tournament at NC State University on Friday, April 24th by placing 1st in their events at the Regional Science Olympiad Tournament. The State Science Olympiad Tournament consisted of middle school and high school teams from across the state. Middle school teams are considered Division B and high school teams are considered Division C. The CHSS Science Olympiad team competed in five different events. Krystle Woods competed in Division C Duct Tape Challenge. Sophie Waterfield and Samantha Smith competed in Division B It Matters! Colby Day and Zachary Huizing competed in Division B Bridge. Brooke Oberbeck and Sophie Waterfield competed in Division B Crimebusters and Colby Day and Max Bigney competed in Division B Duct Tape Challenge. In each event students were competing against 60+ different schools. CHSS is excited to report that Colby Day and Max Bigney placed 5th in the State for Duct Tape Challenge out of 65 teams! Upon entering the event room Colby and Max were given the challenge to create the tallest hat out of duct tape that would stay on their heads without them holding it. They also received bonus points for the width of the brim. Their coach, Jessica Polk, stated, "After the event was over, Colby and Max came running out of the event room ecstatic that they had one of the highest hats in the room! They knew they had done well and we were excited once we found out they had placed 5th out of 65 teams. They should be extremely proud of their creativity and innovation!"

Media Center Eggstravaganza

The 2015 Eggstravaganza sponsored by the CHSS Media Center took place on Tuesday, April 28 with more than 25 participants.  Based on John Green's book Paper Towns, challengers chased down leads, fished clues out of the sound, were detained by Dare Officers and raced around campus digging up buried secrets. Congratulations to all the participants for a game well-played and to Kendal and Krystle Woods for locating the Golden Egg.
