CHSSCS Geocaching Seminar

Cape Hatteras Secondary School of Coastal Studies offered a seminar through the media center to train students in the use of navigational aids, critical thinking, and problem solving skills they would need to locate prize caches. It all came together on Tuesday, March 24. "The kids signed up for the seminar which covered global positioning systems, navigational tools, mapping coordinates in degrees, minutes and seconds, and trilateration - which is a process of determining absolute or relative location using the geometry of circles or spheres. Students spent several days mapping potential locations along the Nags Head Woods Trail through Google Maps and produced a route. They also deciphered codes and identified clues prior to the trip," described Media Specialist Linda Austin. "In less than three hours, they worked as a team in locating 11 caches spread over three miles of wooded area, battled a few ticks, and endured one intense cardio workout!"
