CHSS National History Day
On March 31st, CHSS will be hosting our first school-wide National History Day Competition. National History Day is a research based competition that requires students to think critically about history and create an in-depth project. It was designed to increase student research, writing, primary source interpretation, and analyzing skills while allowing them to have a little fun and show some creativity.
Project options include a research paper, exhibit, performance, documentary, and website. This year's theme is Leadership and Legacy. There are two levels of competition: Middle School (6-8) and High School (9-12). There are nine award categories: research paper, individual exhibit, group exhibit, individual performance, group performance, individual documentary, group documentary, individual website, and group website. We have also added a local award for best local history project. The competition is open to everyone whether they were assigned it as a class assignment or not.

Honors Biology Class Skype with UNC Scientist
Sarah Ann Marks, a 3rd year graduate student at UNC-Chapel Hill, talked about her research and graduate school program with CHSS's Honors Biology Class on Tuesday, March 17th. Thanks to a new extension of NC DNA Day called DNA Day CONNECT, the class is scheduled to Skype with a graduate student twice a month. The program matches researchers with specific classrooms to establish stronger relationships between scientists and North Carolina high schools; the goal being to spark student interest in the sciences and introduce them to careers in science. This partnership will include periodic video chats between the researcher and the classroom where researchers can share their own science experiences and research interests, answer questions from students, and contribute expertise to topics students are currently learning about in their science classes.
6th Grade AIG Create Solar Ovens
Mrs. Polk's 6th grade Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) classes have been working on creating solar ovens. The students worked on gathering data from their solar ovens this week using temperature probes from Venier Software. Next week the students will test out their solar ovens on hot dogs and gather more data. The students will then use their data to create regression equations using the TI-84 calculators.
