DECA Competes at State Competition

Last weekend over 30 CHSS students traveled to Greensboro to compete in the State DECA Competition.  Some of the students presented projects to a group of judges, competed in the role playing portion, marketing, and hospitality and tourism events.  Our students shined once again this year with Kendal and Krystle Woods taking 2nd in the role playing event.  Miranda Veal and Macey Quidley took 1st for their project and work with the Outerbanks Charity, Food For Thought.  These four ladies will travel to Nashville, TN next month to compete at the National Level.  If you would like to help support their trip, please contact Ms. Suzanne Jennette at the high school.

University of Bristol Archaeology Team Returns

This week, the Archaeology Team from University of Bristol headed by Dr. Mark Horton, returned for their annual trip to CHSS.  The students were able to team up with the professors and students to learn more about the history of Hatteras Island.  Students were put into groups where they were able to learn about making pottery from that time period, weaving fish baskets, and digging up artifacts.  At the moment of writing this newsletter, there have not been any artifacts found at this point.  They are hopeful that they will be able to discover items that will help them learn more about the ancestors of Hatteras Island and how they lived.  Thank you to the Croatoan Archaeology Society for working with our students and helping to bring the group of England.

Peer Power Students Making a Difference

The High School Peer Power class taught by Mrs. Brenda Shiflet has been teaching Cape Hatteras Elementary Students about healthy drink options.  Their goal is to get the children in younger grades to know what are some healthy options and help them make better choices when they reach for that drink.  They discussed the amount of sugar content found in sodas, juices, milk, and sports drinks.  Peer Power is a peer health program that has 3 areas of curriculum: Nutrition, Physical Activity, and ATOD (Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs).
