CHSS Students attend National College Fair

The National College Fair that was held at the Convention Center in Raleigh. CHSS took 24 freshmen-junior students to the fair which had an estimated attendance of 4,500 students from across NC and close to 300 colleges and universities from NC and across the nation. There were even a few international universities!

Jessica Polk, AIG coordinator, and Karla Jarvis, CHSS Counselor,  organized the trip. Mrs. Jarvis states, "Some of the students will soon be facing these kinds of decisions, while others have some time between now and that type of decision but it's always good to know and understand what is out there, what the options are and that's why I think that this was such a great opportunities for our students regardless of their age!"

Middle School Students Survivor Week

In connection with "Survivor" themed literature and reading the novel, Hatchet, CHSS middle school students completed a series of survival challenges this week. They've built a shelter with limited supplies, created survival kits from items in their backpacks, explored the power of positive thinking, designed a missing person poster and safety suggestions for our island visitors and residents, competed in survival trivia, and identified effects of limiting factors on sea turtle population.  The series of cross-curricular activities enabled students to collaborate, build on prior knowledge, make real world connections, and refine critical thinking skills.  Sixth grade Language Arts classes will celebrated their "survivors" with an obstacle course, feast, and medals.
