Cape Hatteras Secondary School, This Week at Cape Hatteras Secondary School March 11th Edition

Breaking Ground with the Governor

March 8th, 2016 was a very important day for students and residents of Hatteras Island.  The ground breaking for the replacement of the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge took place with state officials, residents, and CHSS students on hand to take place in the ceremony.  Bob Woodard even made reference to the students of CHSS during the ceremony that can be watching if full on Youtube.  Many news media outlets were on hand for this momentous occasion.  Wavy news has a video shot of some of our students that were seated 2nd row. Thank you to all the state-local-county officials, parents, community members, and all that helped make this happen.

CHSS Band Program – Season of Honor Bands!

This winter several students at Cape Hatteras auditioned, and participated, in various Honor Bands around the state of North Carolina.  Band students kicked off January with auditions for the Eastern District Honors Band.  Enrique Babilonia, Henry Macchio and Amy Chen all made the honors Band! Enrique and Henry made the 9/10 band, Amy Chen made the MS Concert Band. These students returned to ECU in February to rehearse with their guest clinicians, and performed at concert at ECU’s Wright Auditorium.

CHSS Jazz students also got active in the Regional Jazz Auditions.  Several auditioned for the group, and Enrique Babilonia made the top Jazz group for the Eastern Region.  Enrique was invited to UNC Wilmington and attended a clinic/concert with the Jazz Professor from UNC Pembroke.  During the concert Enrique was featured on the Duke Ellington’s “Take the A Train.”

Winter ended well for Enrique as his top notch auditions in the previous earned the opportunity to audition for the North Carolina All-State Band in Greensboro. Enrique had a great audition and made the 9/10 North Carolina All-State Band!  Enrique is invited to Durham in May to join other top musicians in the state at the All-State Clinic/Concert.  Enrique is the first student under Mr. McCroskey to make the NC All-State Band.  He will have a great experience, and will make Hatteras Proud!

Congratulations to all the students who auditioned and participated in the Honor Bands this Winter!

Boating Safety Certifications

Members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary spent the last week teaching a Boating Education Course to students of the Cape Hatteras Secondary School of Coastal Studies.  The course which is sponsored by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission helps to prepare individuals in the safe, responsible operation of boats and personal watercraft, and is required by law for anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 who wishes to operate a boat equipped with a 10hp or greater motor, or any PWC in North Carolina.  At its completion, 21  Hatteras Middle School students  received their boating certificate.  The students would like to give special thanks to Coast Guard Auxiliarists,  Kal Gencsos and Bill Hennig, along with NC Wildlife Officer R. Martine for their time and expertise.

Attention Seniors and Parents

There will be a parent meeting for the senior trip on Wednesday, March 23rd at 6:00 pm in the CHSS cafeteria. All parents and students must attend for the student to go on the senior trip. If there is a conflict, please contact Mrs. Polk.

UNC Destiny Bus Visits CHSS

Mrs. Del Monte's classes received a grant from the  Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund for the UNC Destiny Bus to work with her students this past week.  More than a quarter-million North Carolina students have climbed aboard a Morehead mobile lab to experience hands-on laboratory activities — the same type of real-world experiments that North Carolina scientists conduct every day as part of their research.

The CHSS honors biology class participated in "Get a Clue," role-play forensic scientists to analyze drops of “blood” and other evidence found at crime scenes and determine which suspects are guilty. The students used DNA restriction analysis (popularly known as DNA fingerprinting) to analyze the data.
The AP Biology students participated in "Mystery of the Crooked Cell."  Students discover the molecular basis of sickle cell disease and use gel electrophoresis as a diagnostic tool to differentiate normal hemoglobin from hemoglobin found in individuals with sickle cell disease.
This is the 4th year the Morehead Mobile Lab has been to CHSS.

National History Day

On March 23rd, CHSS will be hosting the second school-wide National History Day Competition during the day. National History Day is a literacy based competition that requires students to think critically about history and create an in depth research project.  It was designed to increase student research, writing, primary source interpretation and analyzing skills while allowing them to have a little fun and show some creativity.  Project options include a research paper, exhibit, performance, documentary and website. This year's theme is Exploration, Encounter, and Exchange. There are two levels of competition: Middle School (6-8) and High School (9-12).  On the evening of March 23rd, there will be a parent’s night so that family members could come and admire their student’s hard work.  In addition to the National History Day projects, there will also be other samples of student work from other courses.  The event will take place from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.  Please join us in celebrating our student’s hard work.
