CHSS Middle School Spelling Bee

The spelling bee at CHSS was held last Tuesday in the auditorium.  There were 14 participants this year from grades 6-8.  Peyton Cabral was the returning champion from the 2015 spelling bee and had some tough competition from 6th grader, Elizabeth Muller.  Peyton was able to retain the crown of the CHSS Spelling Bee Champion with the winning word- "Electoral".  The regional spelling bee will be mid March in Washington, NC.  Peyton will be competing alongside his brother Blake, CHES Spelling Champ.  We will be rooting for both Cabral's as they go on to represent Cape Hatteras Schools.

HIYEF Service Initiative Program

The Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund (HIYEF) is very excited to announce a new program to be tested this spring. The HIYEF Service Initiative Program is a Pilot Program. The purpose of this program is to alleviate some of the fundraising pressure that the high school classes are experiencing. In addition, this program attempts to allow for projects that are not typically associated with fund raising. HIYEF hopes to encourage the students of CHSS to give back to the community through service and volunteerism, instill students with confidence and positivity though their actions and efforts, and create comradery, leadership and team building within the classes.

To participate, each class will select one project or a number of associated smaller projects that will benefit Hatteras Island and its community, the Outer Banks and/or Dare County. The project must include as many members of the class as possible. Class officers will make a presentation to the HIYEF Board outlining their project at a future date to be scheduled this spring. The board will then determine the amount of funds to be awarded to each class.

Dodge Ball is a Hit!

The CHSS Project Purple Team sponsored dodge ball night on Friday.  Teams from the elementary, middle school, high school, US Coast Guard, Avon Fire Department, and other local individuals came to participate in some good old fashion fun.  The Coast Guard dominated the night with their hard and accurate hits.  Thank you to Project Purple and Mrs. Garcia for organizing this event.

Chili Cook Off for Art

Hot when it's not was the slogan for Saturday's Art Department Chili Cook Off and it was spot on.  Over 20 different types of chili were prepared for the contest.  Many people had a difficult time in deciding which one was the best tasting.  Some of the different ingredients that were used: black bear, sirloin, fajita meat, celery, carrots, lima beans, and corn.  CHSS Junior Payton Smith won the overall cook off with her secret recipe.  The Art department raised over $1,000 with the fundraiser and Art Show.  Thank you again to all that participated and came out to show your support.
