Cape Hatteras Secondary School, This Week at Cape Hatteras Secondary School December 4th Edition

Student - Parent - Teacher Conferences

The Middle School Teachers are sponsoring Student-Led Conferences on Tuesday December 8th and Wednesday December 9th.  Parents may sign up either day for the 8-10 am (breakfast items provided) time or the 3-5 pm (snack food items provided) time slot.  Your child should have brought home a form for you to sign and check which time works best for you. If you did not receive that form, then please send a note back with your child stating which time slot you would like to come.  The conferences are designed for the students to show parents their work, how they can access their grades, discuss future goals, and plan for academic success.  The conferences will not be long and all parents are encouraged to please come and be apart of this event.  This is a great way for you to see what your child does in the classroom and for you to ask any questions.

Foods and Biology STEM Projects at Conetoe

Cape Hatteras Secondary Foods and Biology students teamed up for a STEM project with Conetoe Family Life Center in Conetoe, NC.  Students and adults discuss barriers to food access in both Dare and Edgecombe Counties and brainstorm ways to improve health and food access in both places.  A food exchange has been established over the past year where Cape Hatteras trades seafood for plants, freshly grown produce, and honey.  The groups hope to find ways to get fresh local seafood and vegetables into the local public schools and hospitals.

Financial Literacy Day at CHSS

Wednesday, December 2nd: CHSS hosted a Financial Literacy Day for high school students.  Over 20 members of the community came out to help students understand the importance of managing their money, budgeting, planning, and preparing for their future.  Students were given a yearly salary and then had the task to plan a monthly budget.  Community members were assigned tables to help the students plan how their money may be spent on: rent, insurance, auto, entertainment, cell phone, etc....  Student Sandra Sanchez said one of the most important lessons she learned for the day, is that it is important to maintain good credit or you will have a hard time buying when you get older.  Thank you all that helped this event be a success for the students.
