AP Biology Class Hands On at ECU

For the 5th year, the AP Biology students traveled to East Carolina University to work with Dr. Lee Sutton in the Anatomy and Physiology and Human Gross Anatomy Labs.  The AP Biology students sat in on a Comparative Anatomy lecture with Dr. Sutton and his students, then worked in the labs dissecting sheep eyes, cow kidneys, and cats.  The students then viewed the Human Gross Anatomy lab, comparing organs they viewed in the cat to those in a human.  This is a unique opportunity that only CHSS AP biology students are afforded!

Students Battle at Match Competition

Wednesday April 6th, 24 CHSS Students traveled to a math competition at Elizabeth City State. Students took 80-minute tests in Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, or Comprehensive. The tests were rigorous and brain draining from what one of the competitors said.  All of the students did well at the event with the CHSS Geometry team placing 3rd. The Geometry team consisted of  Finni Harmon, Trafton Reynolds, Andrea Covey, Colby Day, Henry Macchio, and Nyah Machie.  CHSS has the building blocks to return next year even stronger and plans to have more trophies returning with them.  Great job to the Math Department and Students on a job well done.

National History Day Winners Announced

Congratulations to the following winners in this year National History Day Competitions.
The students worked hard and showed a lot of creativity this year.  The number one comment from our judges this year was that they saw growth.  This may be a "History" competition, but this a cross-curriculum project and the students use items taught to them in class.  Great job to all that competed and the winners.

Chef Steve Marsey Visits CHSS

Thank you to Chef Steve Marsey and Marisa Marsey for visiting from Johnson and Wales University this past week.  The Marsey's discussed all the amazing offerings at JWU and also about the scholarship opportunities available. Chef Steve taught students how to make tomato concasse and strawberry shortcake with chantilly cream. What a great day for our students!
