Brooke Oberbeck Wins Essay Contest

Brooke Oberbeck won 1st place in the Intermediate Division (grades 6-8) American Revolutionary War Essay Contest, sponsored by the Tar heel Junior Historian Association and the North Carolina Museum of History.  Brooke will travel to the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh on Friday, April 24th for the awards ceremony in order to be recognized at the state level and receive a monetary prize.

 

 

 

 

 

CHSS Students Attend STEM Fair at COA

On Wednesday, 40 CHSS high school students attended the Dare County STEM fair held at the College of the Albemarle.  Students were able to visit with professionals from all types of technical fields and attend seminars to demonstrate the skills that are used in their fields.  Students Langston Cabral, Maverick Webb, and Eli Midgette competed in the junk box challenge to design and build a leak proof model house with only the items given.  Some of the presenters at the STEM Fair: NACAR, 3D Printing, Graphic Design, Computer Programming, Civil Engineering, NC Aquariums, UNC Coastal Studies, and Aviation Technology.

 

 

 

 

Students Take Coding Class

This past week, CHSS's Linda Austin has been teaching students about coding in the Media Center. Students were able to learn coding by working their way through an online program that teaches how to code programs, character movements in games, web design, and other activities.  Students will continue the program  and will have the opportunity to take a more advanced course in the future. 

 

 

 

DNA Day in Honors Biology Class

On April 21st, Erin Del Monte's biology classes participated in North Carolina DNA Day.  The students worked with their DNA Day Ambassador, Sarah Ann Marks, graduate student at UNC-Chapel Hill. Students learned about topics in forensics, extracted their own DNA from their saliva, and constructed and analyzed a DNA fingerprint.  Del Monte's honors biology class will continue their discussions with Ms. Marks on April 30th, where they will skype in and learn about the lasers she uses in her biology research. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

High School Prom May 2nd

This years theme for the high school prom is Arabian Nights and will be held at the Beach Club in Avon.  Tickets may be purchased in the foyer of the high school hall during Hurricane Watch.  Project Purple will host the after prom party in the High School Gym. All people attending the after prom party must be there by 11:30.  Food, games, and prizes will be given out to those who attend.  Even if you don't attend prom, you can come and hang out with your friends from 11:30 till 3 a.m. in a safe and fun environment.
