Colonial Inn in Nags Head overlooks the magnificent Atlantic Ocean and combines traditional charm with modern accommodations, updated amenities and private beach access. Centrally located next to Nags Head Fishing Pier, this Outer Banks hotel is convenient to numerous attractions, outdoor activities and within walking distance of a variety of restaurants. One of the first establishments to provide guest accommodations in Nags Head, Colonial Inn was extensively renovated and remodeled in recent years. Accommodations include standard king and double rooms (with refrigerator and microwave), efficiency apartments and fully equipped apartments that sleep up to ten guests. Amenities include free passes to the Outer Banks Family YMCA, an outdoor swimming pool, outdoor grills and overflow parking. Colonial Inn is pet friendly, nonsmoking and only closes from December to March.

In a building constructed to resemble a historic life-saving station, Hatteras Island Inn is one of the most modern accommodations options on the island. There are 61 rooms here, each with a small refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, cable TV and WiFi. Rooms feature two doubles or one king, and some have a sleeper sofa. There’s a park grill and an outdoor pool here, and the beach is within walking distance. Be sure to check out the observation tower, which offers nice views of the island. The office is open 24 hours, and the hotel is open year round. 

For clean, comfortable accommodations in an ideal Outer Banks location, Hotel Manteo, a Wyndham Resort, offers fresh, contemporary decor and boutique-style amenities in a traditional hotel setting. The hotel, part of the town's history since 1954, has been completely reimagined and updated, with all 78 standard rooms, suites and kitchenette apartments newly decorated and outfitted with furnishings, appliances and coffeemakers. Hotel amenities include a brand-new outdoor pool, a 24-hour fitness center, a comfortable lobby and refreshment kiosk, room service, free parking and complimentary WiFi. The onsite private event space, Embers Lounge, can accommodate up to 60 guests for seated or standing events, and the onsite restaurant, Firetender Stone Oven Cooking & Bar and Weeping Radish Taproom, is one of Manteo's most popular spots for dinner and Sunday brunch. Hotel Manteo's location has the feeling of quiet, small-town charm, yet the hotel is within walking or biking distance of all the popular Downtown Manteo shops, attractions, restaurants and bars, about a five-minute drive to the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island, The Elizabethan Gardens and The Lost Colony, and only about a 10-minute drive to the bustling beaches of Nags Head and Cape Hatteras National Seashore. 

This Outer Banks hotel is neat and well-kept. Most of the hotel is located on the oceanfront, but there are some rooms available in separate buildings across the beach road. They also handle the reservations for one of the traditional motels on the beach, the Wilbur and Orville Wright. Choose from accommodations of efficiencies, suites up to two bedrooms and standard rooms. Efficiencies and suites have full kitchens, and rooms have micro-fridges and coffee makers. Free wireless internet is available in all rooms. There is an outdoor pool open in season. All guests can enjoy complimentary access to the Outer Banks YMCA in Nags Head, which has outdoor and indoor pools, fitness equipment, cardio and yoga classes. Every morning the hotel serves a complimentary continental breakfast. Mariner Inn & Suites is open all year with the exception of one week around Christmas.

The oceanfront Outer Banks Motel offers 12 standard motel rooms, each with a refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker and toaster. The motel grounds have a saltwater pool, hot tub, library, free rowboats and ocean access. In addition to its standard motel rooms, Outer Banks Motel offers six efficiency units with a full kitchen and 13 cottages, all with cable TV. The cottages and efficiencies are available by the week only in the summer. Outer Banks Motel also offers 20 cottages in the heart of Buxton, about a mile back from the ocean. These cottages range from one to three bedrooms and rent by the night or week.

Roanoke Island Inn is one of Manteo’s most beautiful historic inns. It’s in the heart of the historic district, situated along the boardwalk and overlooking the water. The original building dates to the 1860s, and later additions and renovations have this inn sprawling over its large lot with lush landscaping and a quaint picket fence. The inn offers eight rooms with private baths and outside entrances; two of the accommodations are family suites. Dog-friendly accommodations are available. A comfortable common area (wait until you see the frescoed ceiling), a peaceful back yard with a koi pond  and a well-stocked innkeeper’s pantry are welcoming touches. Guests have 24-hour access to the fully stocked pantry, and a continental breakfast is set out each morning from 8 to 11 a.m. WiFi is available in the guest rooms and the lobby. In the backyard garden is a bungalow offering two bedrooms and a wet bar but no cooking facilities. Children are welcomed in the two family suites and in the bungalow, and dogs are allowed in the bungalow. Bikes are available for guests to use. They close in January and February every year.

Roanoke Island Inn is now also offering the Croatan Cottage, a charming fully restored and furnished 1920s Sears kit home located in downtown Manteo next to the entrance to Roanoke Island Festival Park. Voted #6 in Best Homes 2012 by Hooked on Houses, the Croatan Cottage offers three bedrooms and three baths, sleeps up to six people and is pet friendly. The house rents for a two-night minimum.
